European Union launches call for seven AI Gigafactories

The European Commission has launched a call to establish up to seven AI Gigafactories across the continent, part of its InvestAI strategy to bolster technological sovereignty and reduce dependence on the United States and China. The initiative aims to mobilize over 30 billion euros in public and private investment, with final decisions on the facilities expected by early 2027.

Several nations and consortia are competing for these strategic sites. In Czechia, České Radiokomunikace (CRA) is bidding to host a facility near Prague, leveraging existing data center developments. In France, the AION consortium—comprising 28 companies including Scaleway, EDF, and Orange—has proposed a 10 billion euro investment to secure a French-based gigafactory, highlighting the country's advantage in low-carbon electricity.

In Spain, the Association of Data Centers (SpainDC) anticipates that the expansion of cloud and AI infrastructure could drive up to 66.9 billion euros in investment by 2030. Meanwhile, Mistral AI has announced an ambitious plan to build 1 gigawatt of European compute capacity by 2030, transitioning from model development to providing critical infrastructure with regional inference endpoints and uptime guarantees.

These developments are expected to trigger significant industrial activity across sectors including data centers, energy, telecommunications, and cybersecurity.
