Częstochowa referendum committee collects 19,000 signatures to recall mayor

The referendum committee in Częstochowa has announced that it has collected 19,000 signatures to recall the city's president, Krzysztof M., and the City Council. This exceeds the required threshold of approximately 15,900 signatures.

The movement follows a corruption scandal involving several prominent local officials. The Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA) previously arrested the vice president of Częstochowa and the chairman of the City Council, both of whom are members of the Civic Platform party. President Krzysztof M. has also faced charges regarding the acceptance of financial benefits.

While a previous attempt to hold a referendum in 2025 failed to gather enough signatures, the current campaign, initiated by the 'Czas na referendum' committee, has secured a significant surplus. The signatures will now undergo a 30-day verification process by the electoral commissioner. If approved, a vote could take place between October and November.
