D-Wave Quantum pushes breakthroughs as shares tumble ahead of earnings

D-Wave Quantum reported rapid advances in its quantum‑annealing technology, highlighted by a partnership with AT&T that cut network‑optimization tasks from one hour to under 15 seconds – a 240‑fold speedup. Its Advantage2 system, now equipped with more than 4,400 qubits and a new Zephyr topology, saw usage rise 314 % over the past year, and the company plans to launch commercial gate‑model processors this year, aiming for 100 logical qubits by 2032.

Despite the technical progress, D‑Wave’s stock has slumped 36.76 % year‑to‑date, falling another 7.46 % to €14.33 after reaching a 52‑week high of €38.48 in October 2025. Analysts maintain a target price of €32.98, implying a potential 130 % upside, while the market values the firm at about €6.35 billion. The company will disclose its second‑quarter 2026 results on 6 August.

The broader quantum‑computing field has moved from theory to practice over the past decades. Early concepts were introduced by Yuri Manin and Paul Benioff in 1980, followed by Richard Feynman’s 1981 call for quantum simulators, David Deutsch’s 1985 universal quantum computer model, and Peter Shor’s 1994 algorithm that threatened RSA encryption. Experimental milestones began in 1998 with small‑scale demonstrations by Jonathan Jones, Michele Mosca, and Isaac Chuang, laying the groundwork for today’s commercial efforts.
