D-Wave Quantum to receive up to $100 million from U.S. Department of Commerce
D-Wave Quantum has entered a binding agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce to receive up to $100 million in funding through the CHIPS and Science Act. In exchange, the Department will receive a minority stake in the company without controlling rights. The investment is intended to accelerate research and development in quantum computing within the United States.
This funding aligns with a broader strategic shift in U.S. semiconductor policy. While initial CHIPS Act efforts focused heavily on domestic manufacturing and foundry construction, recent allocations are pivoting toward the critical bottlenecks of the AI compute stack. This includes investments in advanced packaging, interconnects, memory, photonics, and secure electronics to bolster overall computing capabilities.
Following the announcement, D-Wave Quantum's stock rose 5.6 percent to 15.21 euros. The agreement is viewed as a signal of the company's strategic importance to Washington in the global race for quantum technology.
