D2 Survivors reimagines Diablo II as a free browser-based survivor game
A fan-made project titled ‘D2 Survivors’ has reimagined the classic action role-playing game Diablo II as a ‘survivors-like’ game, similar to the genre popularized by Vampire Survivors. Developed by Francisco Martínez, the project is free, contains no advertisements, and does not sell any items.
The gameplay shifts the traditional isometric perspective to a horde-survival style where players move to dodge enemies while skills trigger automatically. The game incorporates all seven original classes, their respective skill trees, and the game’s item systems, spanning the original five acts as well as Nightmare and Hell difficulties.
To avoid copyright issues, the project does not distribute Blizzard Entertainment’s assets. Instead, it functions by reading the art and audio files directly from a player’s existing installation of Diablo II (with the Lord of Destruction expansion) or Diablo II: Resurrected. This allows the game to run within a web browser or via a desktop application for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Separately, a mod known as ‘D2R-3D’ has also emerged, which allows players to rotate and zoom the camera in Diablo II: Resurrected, breaking away from the traditional fixed quarter-view perspective.
