D35 motorway construction aims to improve safety on high-accident I/35 road

The construction of the D35 motorway aims to improve safety on the I/35 first-class road in the Czech Republic, which has seen significant fatalities. Between 2010 and 2025, the I/35 road recorded 16,233 accidents, resulting in 255 deaths, 451 serious injuries, and 5,381 minor injuries. While fatalities have trended downward in recent years—averaging approximately 10 deaths per year since 2018 compared to over 21 per year between 2010 and 2017—the road remains a major safety concern.

Progress on the D35 motorway has been slowed by bureaucracy, land acquisition disputes, and environmental impact assessments. As segments of the motorway open, they have contributed to a reduction in the severity of accidents.

In Vysoké Mýto, local officials are planning infrastructure changes to accommodate shifting traffic patterns. Plans include repairing the Javornická and Litomyšlská street intersection to prioritize pedestrians and exploring ways to connect the bus station directly to the I/35 once transit traffic shifts to the new motorway. Additionally, a bypass for Vysoké Mýto is planned for 2027, with state funding of 600 million CZK secured.
