D7VK enters maintenance mode with version 2.3 release

D7VK, a Vulkan-based translation layer designed to run early Direct3D games (versions 3, 5, 6, and 7) on Linux via Wine and Proton, has released version 2.3. With this update, the developer, WinterSnowfall, announced that the project is entering maintenance mode.

Version 2.3 introduces several reworks regarding object handling, new fixes, and workarounds for early Direct3D games. A notable performance optimization involves controlling the memory placement of shadow surfaces to prevent swap chain conflicts. In benchmarks for the game Empire Earth, this optimization resulted in a performance increase from 80.6 FPS to 137 FPS.

While the project is moving into maintenance mode—meaning no new major features will be developed and bug fixes will arrive more slowly—the codebase is considered to have reached a point of maturity. The tool remains a significant resource for preserving compatibility for immediate-mode legacy Windows games on Linux systems.
