Día de Muertos traditions and banking closures in Mexico and Guatemala

As the Día de Muertos celebrations approach, several countries are observing traditional customs and adjusting financial schedules. In Mexico, the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) has scheduled November 2, 2026, as a non-working day for the financial sector. Consequently, bank branches, including major institutions like BBVA México, Banorte, and Banamex, will suspend in-person operations on Monday, November 2. While physical branches will be closed, customers can still access digital banking, mobile apps, and ATMs.

Similarly, in Guatemala, the Monetary Board has authorized the closure of banks, insurance companies, and exchange houses on November 2, 2026, to observe the All Saints' Day holiday. While most branches will close, some specific agencies may offer limited services.

Cultural observances vary by region. In Mexico, popular beliefs suggest different groups of souls return on specific dates, such as those who died tragically on October 28 or those who died by drowning on October 29. Beyond Mexico, various communities in the United States, including Memphis and San Jose, are hosting events to honor the tradition through altars, parades, and cultural performances.
