DA Direkt seeks entry into Romanian RCA insurance market
German insurer DA Direkt, a subsidiary of the Zurich Insurance Group, has taken official steps to enter the Romanian mandatory third-party liability (RCA) insurance market. On September 21, 2026, the company submitted the necessary documentation to the Bureau of Motor Vehicle Insurers in Romania (BAAR) to become a member.
Rather than establishing a local Romanian insurance company, DA Direkt plans to operate via the European Freedom of Services (FOS) mechanism. To support its local operations, the company will partner with Ominimo, an insurance technology firm, to provide the digital infrastructure required for the offering, issuance, and administration of policies. The business model is expected to focus primarily on digital distribution.
While the company is not yet selling policies, the application is currently under review by BAAR. If the process proceeds according to market estimates, a launch could occur as early as December 2026 or during 2027.
