Da Nang aims to become an ecological coastal city through biodiversity conservation
Da Nang is leveraging its diverse ecosystems, including forests in the Truong Son Range, wetlands, and UNESCO biosphere reserves, to support its goal of becoming an internationally recognized ecological coastal city.
The Bai Say-Song Dam wetland, a 200-hectare area in the southern part of the city, serves as a vital habitat for numerous bird species, including the rare Asian openbill. Due to its ecological significance, local authorities plan to establish a new nature reserve in this area. Conservation efforts involve collaborating with organizations to research, protect, and restore the ecosystem through fish restocking and vegetation planting, while also developing ecotourism.
The city’s broader ecological landscape covers nearly 12,000 sq. km within the central Truong Son ecological core. Protected areas include Song Thanh National Park, the Son Tra Peninsula Nature Reserve, and the Cu Lao Cham World Biosphere Reserve. Additionally, the Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area has shown signs of success, with experts noting the presence of wild elephants and calves, indicating natural reproduction within the population.
