Da Nang authorities identify martyr via photograph found in grave

Authorities in Da Nang have made significant progress in identifying an unnamed martyr after a photograph found in a grave led to a family connection. During an inspection of grave number 104 at the Tam Thai Martyrs Cemetery, officials discovered a wallet containing a portrait of a woman, a metal plate with the inscription “Thà hy sinh tất cả, quyết không làm nô lệ” (Rather die than be a slave), and other personal items.

Following the discovery, Nguyen Thi Hanh, a resident of Bac Ninh province, recognized the woman in the photograph as herself in her youth. She identified the photograph as a gift she had given to her uncle, martyr Nguyen Van Hau, before he departed for duty.

Preliminary cross-referencing of records indicates the remains likely belong to Nguyen Van Hau, born in 1930, who held the rank of Private and died on May 14, 1969, during combat in the Quang Nam region. The Da Nang Military Command is continuing efforts to confirm the identity through further verification processes.
