Vietnam police crack down on major fraud, gambling, and drug rings
Law enforcement agencies in Vietnam have reported a series of significant criminal activities involving fraud, gambling, and narcotics.
In a major financial fraud case, the Ministry of Public Security updated the investigation into Nguyễn Ngọc Thủy (known as ‘Shark Thủy’), Chairman of EGroup. The amount misappropriated through fraudulent capital mobilization has risen to over 8,459 billion VND, affecting 10,123 victims. Thủy allegedly inflated EGroup’s charter capital from 32 billion VND to over 962 billion VND to attract investors.
In Hưng Yên, police dismantled an online gambling ring operating via the Net.win website. The investigation revealed that over 1,000 billion VND in transactions passed through 13 rented bank accounts, with operators requiring biometric facial scans to facilitate transfers.
Narcotics enforcement remains active, with major busts in Hanoi, Bắc Ninh, and An Giang. In Bắc Ninh, authorities seized over 2.3kg of various drugs and indicted 12 suspects. In An Giang, four individuals were detained for drug use, with police seizing 445g of narcotics and a suspected firearm.
Other reported incidents include a medical fraud scheme in Hanoi where suspects posed as doctors to sell fake herbal medicines for tumors, and a smuggling case in Đà Nẵng involving used gaming machines from Japan.
