Da Xu, 99, undergoes hip replacement in British Columbia

Da Xu, a 99-year-old resident of South Surrey, British Columbia, recently underwent a total hip replacement to address severe arthritic pain. The procedure follows two years of unsuccessful conservative treatments, including cortisone injections, which left Xu unable to walk and reliant on a wheelchair for six months.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Kwee noted that while hip replacements are typically performed on patients aged 60 to 80, Xu’s case is an exception for those over 90. Data from Fraser Health for the 2025-2026 fiscal year shows the average age for hip-replacement patients was 70, with the oldest patient being over 99 years old.
