DACH region life sciences sector faces translation and funding gaps
Experts and industry leaders are discussing the challenges of translating scientific excellence into commercially successful biotechnology companies within the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland). While the region is recognized for its academic excellence, high-ranking institutions, and groundbreaking early-stage R&D, stakeholders note a significant gap in implementation and scaling compared to North America and China.
At the Biotech Summit Austria in Innsbruck, Karl Nehammer, Vice President of the European Investment Bank, emphasized the need to close the financing gap to ensure European innovations can grow and compete globally. He noted that companies require long-term capital to navigate the phase between research and international expansion.
Industry perspectives highlight that while Germany serves as an engine for technologies derived from basic research and Switzerland provides pharmaceutical expertise and capital, the region struggles with the transition from academia to start-ups. Improving the translation of scientific insights into meaningful drug embodiments remains a primary goal for strengthening the European life sciences ecosystem.
