Dadia National Park wildlife poisoning triggers legal action

Six environmental organizations have filed a lawsuit with the Alexandroupoli Prosecutor to investigate a mass poisoning of wildlife within the Dadia-Levkimidia-Soufli National Park. The incident, involving the illegal use of poisoned baits by unknown persons, occurred in early March 2026.

According to the organizations, which include WWF Greece, the Hellenic Ornithological Society, and Callisto, this is one of the largest mass poisoning events in Greece. The incident has severely impacted the sensitive population of endangered black storks during their breeding season, following previous recovery efforts after the 2023 wildfires.

The reported death toll includes nine black storks, four cranes, four crows, one wolf, five foxes, and two martens, with several other animals also affected. The organizations are seeking a full investigation into the criminal use of poisoned baits in the protected area.
