Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do push for administrative integration

Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do province have announced a renewed push for administrative integration, elevating the leadership of the integration task force to the level of deputy mayors to strengthen their efforts. During a kickoff meeting held on the 14th, officials agreed to coordinate their response to ensure the pending special law for administrative integration passes the National Assembly during the regular session.

The two local governments aim to establish an integrated special city by July 2028, adjusting previous timelines to align with the 2028 general elections. This move is intended to address regional priorities such as the construction of the TK New Airport and the attraction of public institutions.

However, experts and local commentary emphasize that achieving internal consensus within the region is critical. Previous attempts faced setbacks due to internal disagreements and concerns regarding the procedural legitimacy of the integration process. Success will depend on resolving local opposition and ensuring that the integration process is perceived as fair and inclusive by residents.
