Daegu begins official process to relocate five military bases to Gunwi

Daegu Metropolitan City has officially entered the administrative process to relocate five military units from the city center to Gunwi County. On the 16th, the city submitted a formal request for military facility relocation consultation to the Ministry of National Defense.

The relocation targets include the Army’s Second Operations Command, 50th Infantry Division Command, and 5th Logistics Support Command, as well as the Air Force’s Air Defense Artillery School and the 1st Missile Defense Brigade. The project will utilize a ‘donation-and-transfer’ model, where the city builds new facilities for the military and, in exchange, receives the vacated urban land.

The plan involves creating a 2.48 million-pyeong military town in Ubo-myeon and a 20,000-pyeong civilian-military coexistence town in Gunwi-eup. Additionally, a 3.2 million-pyeong scientific training ground is planned for Samguk Yusa-myeon. Daegu aims to sign a memorandum of agreement with the Ministry of National Defense by the end of next year, complete the relocation by 2031, and finish developing the former military sites into medical, financial, educational, and industrial hubs by 2033.

Mayor Hong Joon-pyo stated that the project is a balanced development initiative intended to revitalize the local economy and enhance Daegu’s urban competitiveness through strategic spatial restructuring.
