Daegu hosts forum to address youth population outflow
The ‘2026 Population Issue Daegu Forum’ was held at Kyungpook National University to diagnose the causes of youth population outflow in Daegu and seek practical solutions for regional settlement. The event was co-hosted by the Population and Health Welfare Association and the Presidential Committee on Population Strategy.
Data from Daegu City shows that as of June 2026, the youth population stands at 554,402, accounting for 23.6% of the total. However, the net migration of young people out of the city reached 2,332 during the first half of this year. Experts at the forum emphasized that the issue extends beyond mere job numbers, involving growth potential, living conditions, and opportunities to design a future within the region.
Discussions focused on creating an ‘all-in-one ecosystem’ tailored to different life stages of young people. The forum also addressed work-life balance and the importance of shared parenting, highlighting the success of programs like the ‘100 Dads Group’ in improving family relationships and paternal involvement in childcare.
