Daegu Mayor Chu Kyung-ho criticizes regional neglect
Daegu Mayor Chu Kyung-ho has criticized the perceived ‘TK passing’—the marginalization of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region in national development—warning that continued neglect will lead to negative public evaluation. Speaking at the Asia Forum 21 policy debate, Chu expressed regret over the government’s focus on large-scale projects in other regions, such as Honam, while Daegu faces economic challenges and the exclusion of Kyungpook National University from major university development initiatives.
Regarding infrastructure, Chu called for the central government to take a leading role in the TK New Airport project, citing the necessity of national financial support and planning, similar to projects in Gwangju and Busan. He also addressed the construction of a new city hall, stating it will proceed as planned using a mix of general funds and available assets rather than relying solely on land sales.
To address regional economic issues, Chu announced the formation of an ‘Advanced Industry Development Strategy Meeting’ to create a roadmap for Daegu’s industrial transition by the end of the year. He emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation, expressing a willingness to engage with the Democratic Party to secure support for regional interests, including administrative integration and economic restructuring.
