Daegu Metro Line 1 extension faces route and cost disputes
The extension of Daegu Metro Line 1 to Yeongcheon and Gyeongsan is facing significant hurdles regarding route planning and cost-sharing. The project, which passed a preliminary feasibility study in January 2024, aims to connect Daegu, Gyeongsan, and Yeongcheon into a single economic zone via a 5.74km extension with two new stations.
Disputes have emerged over the route and budget. To reduce costs following Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport directives, the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial government proposed shifting the line and stations north. This move has met resistance from residents in the Hayang area of Gyeongsan, who cite concerns over noise, vibration, and the proximity of the tracks to schools and apartment complexes.
Financial disagreements also persist between Gyeongsan and Yeongcheon. Yeongcheon advocates for cost-sharing based on the distance of the segments within each city, while Gyeongsan argues that contributions should reflect the direct benefits and utility provided to its residents. Local officials are calling for compromise and active negotiation to prevent further delays to the regional transit network.
