Daejeon to implement flexible speed limits in child protection zones
Daejeon Metropolitan City has announced a plan to implement flexible speed limits in child protection zones, specifically targeting major roads with six or more lanes. The initiative aims to maintain the current 30km/h limit during daytime hours when children are most active, while increasing the limit to a maximum of 50km/h during nighttime hours to improve traffic efficiency.
The project will be rolled out in stages across 46 sections through 2028, with a total budget of approximately 6.9 billion KRW. The implementation schedule includes 4 sections this year, 15 sections in 2027, and 27 sections in 2028. For roads with four or fewer lanes, fixed signage will be installed this year, while variable signage will be deployed on major roads starting in 2027 to clearly communicate time-based speed changes to drivers.
Before full implementation, the city will conduct thorough investigations of road conditions and traffic characteristics in coordination with the Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency. The final operational plans will be determined following consultations with parents and traffic safety reviews.
