Daewoong Pharmaceutical builds sterile microneedle manufacturing facility

Daewoong Pharmaceutical is establishing a specialized sterile manufacturing facility for microneedle-based medicines at its Daewoong Bio Plant 3 in Hyangnam. The company aims to complete Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification for this sterile clinical drug manufacturing site by the first half of 2027.

The facility will utilize Daewoong Therapeutics’ ‘CLOPAM’ microneedle technology to produce next-generation patch-type drugs, including ‘DWRX5003’, a candidate for obesity and diabetes treatment containing semaglutide. This technology is designed to improve patient convenience by providing an alternative to traditional injections.

The production infrastructure features an automated system to ensure high quality and consistency. Key technologies include precision dispensing automation for uniform drug distribution in micro-molds, pressurized drying to concentrate drugs at the needle tips, and a robotic transfer system to minimize human intervention and prevent cross-contamination. The facility also incorporates advanced sterile barrier systems and real-time monitoring to maintain global-standard cleanliness.
