Daewoong Pharmaceutical targets Indonesian Halal market

Daewoong Pharmaceutical is accelerating its expansion into the Indonesian market by preparing for the country’s upcoming mandatory Halal certification regulations. The company recently participated in a meeting hosted by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Jakarta to discuss import requirements, ingredient safety assessments, and labeling schedules with Indonesian authorities, including the Indonesia Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) and the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH).

To support local market entry, the South Korean government is working to ensure that Halal certificates issued by Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) institutions are recognized in Indonesia. The Ministry is also advocating for measures to reduce the burden of on-site inspections and extend grace periods for existing products.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical is implementing a phased strategy covering cosmetics, health functional foods, and pharmaceuticals. The company is currently constructing a smart factory for solid dosage forms in Cikarang, aiming for GMP approval by July 2027. This facility is designed to serve as a central production hub for the ASEAN Halal market well ahead of the 2034 deadline for mandatory Halal certification for prescription drugs.
