Daewoong Pharmaceutical to lead AI-based drug formulation platform project

Daewoong Pharmaceutical has been selected as the lead organization for a national project funded by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to develop an AI-based platform for optimal drug formulation design. The project, which has a total budget of approximately 5.3 billion KRW, aims to create a system that can suggest optimal prescriptions and processing conditions based on target pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles.

The platform will focus on two main areas: controlled-release formulations, which regulate the speed and pattern of drug release, and combination formulations, which combine multiple active ingredients into a single dose. The research consortium includes Daewoong Pharmaceutical, Kookmin University, Chung-Ang University, and AI Pharm.

Scheduled to run from July 2026 to December 2029, the project will utilize explainable machine learning and Design of Experiments (DoE) to predict dissolution patterns and recommend additives. The team also plans to develop a biomimetic dissolution system to simulate the environment of the stomach and intestines. Ultimately, the consortium intends to commercialize the technology as a web-based subscription platform.
