Dafne Zapata Quintos femicide case triggers arrests, appeal and protests

A 13‑year‑old girl, Dafne Zapata Quintos, died on 16 July 2026 in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, and the death is being investigated as a femicide. A judge on 30 July formally charged the academy director Jorge Luis, the women's‑area head Estrellita, and instructor Danna Yanina, placing them under preventive detention and ordering a three‑month deadline for the complementary investigation.

Danna Yanina’s defense filed a 42‑page appeal on a Friday, arguing due‑process violations and seeking reversal of the linkage to process. The mother of Dafne released a 911 call recording that she says captures Estrellita’s voice during the girl’s final moments.

The Supreme Court of Tamaulipas, led by President Tania Gisela Contreras López, confirmed that more than five additional complaints have been filed against the Academia Militarizada Doenitz. The state’s judicial authority publicly backed the judge’s decisions. Families, friends and supporters have staged multiple protests and marches in Ciudad Madero, demanding Danna Yanina’s release and denouncing alleged mistreatment within the academy.
