Dahme-Spreewald authorities mandate bee sampling due to foulbrood outbreak

Authorities in the Dahme-Spreewald district of Germany have ordered beekeepers to submit samples from approximately 400 colonies following outbreaks of American foulbrood (AFB). The Office for Veterinary Affairs and Consumer Protection reported that 109 registered apiary locations are affected.

To prevent the spread of the disease, beekeepers must comply with sampling requirements by August 30. While the disease is not dangerous to humans or adult bees, it destroys bee larvae and can lead to the mass death of colonies. Officials confirmed additional cases following an initial outbreak near Mittenwalde on July 13.

According to the beekeepers' association, honey and other bee products remain safe for human consumption despite the outbreak.
