Daiichi Sankyo presents new LDL cholesterol management data

At the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress, Daiichi Sankyo presented new data regarding the management of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The findings indicate clinically relevant reductions in c-LDL during the first year of treatment, which are estimated to lead to a significant reduction in cardiovascular risk over a 10-year period.

The therapy achieved a mean relative reduction in c-LDL of at least 24.9% and increased the number of patients reaching their c-LDL targets after one year, regardless of their diabetic status.

Dr. Lluís Masana, president of the Catalan Society of Lipids and Arteriosclerosis, emphasized that treating high LDL levels is essential for preventing atheromatous arterial disease. He stated that “c-LDL is not just another risk factor, it is the cause of the arterial disease known as atherosclerosis,” which results from arterial inflammation caused by cholesterol accumulation. Masana noted that patients with genetic determinants, such as familial hypercholesterolemia, or those with very high cardiovascular risk requiring levels below 55 mg/dl, face the greatest challenges in reaching therapeutic goals.
