Daiki Iikura makes key saves in first start for Yokohama F. Marinos

Yokohama F. Marinos goalkeeper Daiki Iikura delivered a standout performance during his first start of the season in a 1-1 draw against Kyoto Sanga F.C. The 40-year-old veteran was called upon to start unexpectedly after regular goalkeeper Ruben Blanco suffered a knee injury, which is expected to sideline him for approximately four weeks.

Iikura made several critical saves in the first half, including a reaction stop against a shot from Rafael Elias and a subsequent save against a strike from Weberton. Following the match, Iikura attributed his performance to consistent daily preparation, stating, “It is just doing what everyone knows you should do.”

Marinos manager Steve Corica praised Iikura’s performance, noting his bravery and effectiveness in his first game of the season. Despite the successful individual effort, Iikura emphasized the need for continued discipline and self-improvement to maintain his level of play at his age.
