Daily Avocado Intake Reduces Abdominal Fat and Lowers LDL Cholesterol

A 12‑week University of Illinois trial with 105 overweight adults found that women who ate one fresh avocado each day showed a measurable reduction in visceral (organ‑surrounding) abdominal fat, while men saw no change. The study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, investigated fat distribution rather than overall weight loss.

A separate six‑month randomized trial of 786 adults aged over 25, reported in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, showed that daily avocado consumption lowered low‑density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol without affecting body weight. Researchers highlighted the fruit’s monounsaturated fats, dietary fiber, and phytosterols as likely contributors.

A further analysis published in Current Developments in Nutrition confirmed that a large avocado per day reduced the dietary glycemic load by about 14 units, indicating potential benefits for blood‑sugar regulation. Collectively, the findings support avocado as a heart‑healthy food that can improve cholesterol profiles and reduce risky abdominal fat in women.
