Daily Mail loses major UK legal battles over privacy and data protection

A UK High Court dismissed Prince Harry’s privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers on 7 July 2026 after a 46‑day trial, finding the claimants failed to prove unlawful information gathering. The 436‑page judgment noted that suspicion alone was insufficient and highlighted the loss of a key private‑investigator witness. Legal costs were estimated at around £50 million.

In a separate case, the Court of Appeal overturned earlier rulings against the Daily Mail in favour of green‑energy entrepreneur Dale Vince. The newspaper had published a headline about a different donor while featuring Vince’s photograph, breaching data‑protection fairness rules. The appeal granted Vince damages, marking the first successful claim of this kind under UK data‑protection law.
