Daily Multivitamins Tied to Slightly Higher Mortality; Spicy Foods Linked to Longer Lifespan
British GP Dr. Asif Ahmed warned that he would avoid daily multivitamin supplements after a large U.S. study found no survival benefit and a 4 % higher mortality rate in a certain follow‑up period. The analysis, published in JAMA Network Open, tracked 390,124 American adults for more than two decades and concluded the observed link does not prove causation.
Separate research on dietary spice showed that frequent consumption of capsaicin‑rich chili is associated with lower overall mortality. A Chinese cohort of nearly 500,000 adults followed for about seven years reported a 14 % reduction in death risk for people eating spicy food six days a week, and a later U.S. study found a similar 13 % reduction. Capsaicin activates TRPV1 receptors throughout the body, which may underlie the health benefits, though experts note the effect is not universal.
