Daily physical activity could prevent 420,000 dementia cases in Brazil
A study conducted by researchers from Brazil and the United States suggests that incorporating just 10 minutes of daily physical activity could prevent approximately 420,000 cases of dementia in Brazil by 2050. Published in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry, the research indicates that physical inactivity is linked to 14.9% of dementia cases in the country.
Implementing this small daily habit could result in an estimated savings of R$ 16 billion in disease-related costs. In an optimistic scenario where physical inactivity is completely eliminated, potential savings could reach R$ 23 billion. The study utilized 2019 data from the National Health Survey, conducted by the Ministry of Health and IBGE, alongside information from the Global Burden of Disease.
Experts emphasize that even minimal movement provides benefits, particularly for those transitioning from a sedentary lifestyle to any level of activity. Researchers noted that while individual choices are important, physical activity should be viewed as a human right, highlighting the need for public policies to address social barriers such as lack of safe environments and infrastructure for exercise.
