Daimiel aquifer levels drop despite increased rainfall
The water level of the Mancha Occidental I aquifer, which supports the Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park and the Ojos del Guadiana, has dropped by one meter over the last year. According to data released by the Daimiel City Council, the municipal catchment well at Ojos del Guadiana currently sits at 31.30 meters, compared to 30.20 meters on September 30, 2025.
This decline occurred despite a relatively wet hydrological year (2025-2026). Rainfall in the area reached 429 liters per square meter, exceeding the historical average of 380 liters and marking the second rainiest year of the decade. Despite these figures and the fact that the Azuer River recently saw water flow again, the local hydraulic cycle council noted that the increased precipitation has not translated into an improved state for the aquifer.
