Daimler Truck calls for EU CO2 targets to be linked to infrastructure

Achim Puchert, a board member at Daimler Truck and head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, is calling for the European Union to adjust its CO2 regulations for heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers. He argues that regulatory requirements should be more closely tied to the actual expansion of charging infrastructure.

Puchert stated that while the company has invested in electric vehicle portfolios, the development of necessary infrastructure is progressing much slower than announced. He noted that the low market share of electric trucks in Europe is due to insufficient charging points for large commercial vehicles, limited power grid capacity, and high electricity prices that prevent a clear cost advantage over diesel engines.

Warning that heavy fines for missing targets could impair the company's ability to invest, Puchert pointed to China as a successful model where policymakers, infrastructure operators, and industry work closely together to build charging networks along major transport corridors.
