Daimler Truck celebrates 80 years of Unimog off‑road capability

Daimler Truck AG marks the 80th anniversary of the Unimog, a heavy‑duty off‑road vehicle that began in 1945 as a modest agricultural machine. Over eight decades the model has evolved into a rugged platform used for extreme tasks, including fire‑fighting units equipped with a 3,000‑liter water tank and capable of fording 1.2 m of water, climbing steep grades with the “Eselgang” low‑speed mode, and traversing loose terrain thanks to portal axles and differential locks.

Mercedes‑Benz works with specialist body builders to fit the Unimog chassis with firefighting, crane or Technical Relief Service bodies, allowing it to operate where ordinary roads end, such as wildfire zones in Spain and France. The vehicle’s manual‑type controls and high ground clearance are emphasized as essential for reaching remote incident sites under harsh conditions.
