Hydrogen Alliance: Major companies target European heavy-duty transport scale-up

A major alliance of automotive, technology, and energy companies has launched an initiative to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty transport across Europe. The group includes Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility, and MB Energy, with support from German policymakers.

The initiative aims to create a fully integrated hydrogen ecosystem by 2030. Rather than developing components in isolation, the partners will coordinate the simultaneous rollout of hydrogen-powered truck fleets, strategically located refueling infrastructure along key European transport corridors, and a reliable hydrogen supply.

A central objective is to ensure that the total cost of ownership (TCO) for hydrogen trucks remains competitive with conventional diesel engines. This involves optimizing fuel pricing and ensuring infrastructure availability to prevent adoption barriers. Daimler Truck has indicated plans to begin customer operations with a small series of approximately 100 hydrogen trucks by the end of 2026. The alliance intends to provide further details regarding their coordinated roadmap at the IAA Transportation event in Hanover on September 15, 2026.
