Dairy consumption and cholesterol management
Nutritional experts and health organizations, including the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, suggest that individuals with high LDL cholesterol do not necessarily need to eliminate dairy from their diets. Instead, the focus has shifted from dietary cholesterol itself to the consumption of saturated fats, which have a more significant impact on raising “bad” cholesterol levels.
While whole milk contains higher levels of saturated fats and cholesterol, skim milk is highly recommended for those managing cholesterol levels. Skim milk provides essential nutrients such as calcium, potassium, and high-quality proteins while significantly reducing the intake of saturated fats. For comparison, 100 ml of whole milk contains approximately 11 mg of cholesterol and 3.5% fat, whereas skim milk contains only about 2 mg of cholesterol and less than 0.5% fat.
