Dairy specialists promote animal welfare and longevity in Chile

In Osorno, Chile, specialists and producers gathered for a seminar titled ‘The Right Moment: Longevity and Decision-Making in the Dairy Herd.’ The event focused on the intersection of animal welfare and economic efficiency.

The Dairy Consortium’s Animal Welfare Committee presented a new bulletin designed to guide producers on managing cows at the end of their productive cycles. Experts emphasized that balancing animal longevity with welfare can increase production by extending the number of lactations per cow, thereby providing economic benefits to producers.

Researchers from the Universidad Católica de Temuco, Dr. Grisel Navarro and Dr. Ana Velásquez, presented the publication, which aims to help producers make timely, efficient decisions regarding the removal of cows from the herd to avoid late decisions caused by disease.
