Dairy trans fats differ from industrial types in health impact

New research published in the journal ‘Nutrition Research’ suggests a significant distinction between natural trans fatty acids found in dairy and industrial trans fats. Analysis of data from thousands of participants across Europe, Canada, and the United States indicates that trans fats naturally occurring in milk, butter, and cheese do not increase the risk of heart disease or type 2 diabetes.

In fact, long-term studies spanning over twenty years found that higher concentrations of dairy-based trans fatty acids were associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Researchers noted that while industrial trans fats, created through partial hydrogenation of vegetable oils, are linked to metabolic syndrome, natural trans fats produced by ruminant animals may have different effects on the body.

Ian Givens of the University of Reading, a co-lead researcher, emphasized that dairy products should not be viewed as a concern for heart health when consumed as part of a balanced diet. Experts advise consumers to avoid products containing ‘partially hydrogenated oils’ to bypass industrial trans fats.
