Dairyland Power and South Shore Energy cancel Nemadji Trail Energy Center

Dairyland Power Cooperative and South Shore Energy have officially canceled plans to build the Nemadji Trail Energy Center (NTEC), a proposed $1 billion natural gas-fired power plant in Superior, Wisconsin. In a letter to the Public Service Commission, Allete manager Daniel McCourtney confirmed that no construction has occurred on the plant or its generation tie line and requested the relinquishment of all associated rights.

The project, which was intended to produce between 550 and 625 megawatts of power, was designed to provide a reliable electricity source as utilities transitioned from coal to renewable energy. However, the proposal faced years of opposition from environmental groups, Indigenous communities, and local residents due to concerns regarding air pollution, climate impact, and cost.

Environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club and Clean Wisconsin, have welcomed the decision. Representatives from these groups described the cancellation as a victory for public health and the Great Lakes region following years of legal challenges and advocacy against the project.
