DairyNZ launches initiative to improve dairy-beef integration
The Dairy Beef Opportunities initiative has launched a four-year program to strengthen the integration between dairy and beef systems. This collaborative effort involves DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb NZ, the Meat Industry Association, dairy companies, and the government.
The initiative is structured around three primary pillars: genetics, farm systems, and market developments. The goal is to increase the proportion of non-replacement dairy calves that are suitable for beef production, thereby improving economic returns for farmers and creating higher-value products.
Project leadership emphasizes the need for improved sire genetics, better calf-rearing practices, and enhanced cross-sector communication to scale the potential of the dairy-beef sector.
