Daistong villagers testify before MHRC over Shree Cement dispute

Residents of Daistong village appeared before the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to testify regarding a complaint against the conduct of a public hearing for the Shree Cement Integrated Cement Plant.

The villagers allege they were barred from attending the December 19, 2025, hearing conducted by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board. Activists and residents reported that individuals, some wearing masks, blocked access to the hearing at multiple locations.

Local residents have opposed the cement project due to concerns regarding potential threats to water sources, air quality, agricultural fields, and local caves. They have also raised concerns about the loss of trees in the Elaka Nongkhlieh area. Following this physical appearance before the MHRC, the residents are awaiting an official order from the Commission.
