Dak Lak court sentences man to death for killing police officer

The Dak Lak Provincial People's Court has sentenced Nguyen Van Ty to death for murder following a violent attack that resulted in the death of a police officer.

According to the indictment, the incident began on the evening of September 7, 2025, when Ty attacked his sister-in-law with a knife due to family disputes. After the initial assault, Ty fled. On the morning of September 8, 2025, while Xuan Loc Commune Police were searching for the suspect, Major Nguyen Dong Canh and his colleagues approached Ty in a sand dune area. During the encounter, Ty repeatedly stabbed Major Canh and struck him with a helmet, causing fatal injuries due to acute blood loss.

Forensic psychiatric evaluations determined that Ty suffered from personality disorders and impaired cognitive control due to the use of stimulant drugs at the time of the crimes. However, the court ruled that these factors did not diminish the exceptionally serious nature of his actions or his disregard for the law and human life.
