Dakar 2026 unveils medal designs inspired by Senegalese culture

The medal designs for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games have been officially unveiled, marking the first time an Olympic sporting event will be held on the African continent. The designs are intended to reflect the heritage, culture, and youth of Senegal.

Created by Spanish designer Pilar Barbadillo Vicario through a global competition launched by the International Olympic Committee, the medals feature the theme ‘The Roar of Youth.’ The obverse side depicts a lion, a symbol of strength and courage in Senegal, with a mane composed of two faces inspired by Senegalese craftsmanship to represent equity. These faces are crowned with olive branches, a traditional Olympic symbol for victory and peace.

The reverse side features the baobab tree, an emblem of Senegal and the African continent that symbolizes longevity, strength, and wisdom.
