Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic flame lit in Athens

The Olympic flame for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games was officially lit on September 10 at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece. Following tradition, the flame was kindled using a concave mirror to concentrate solar rays. The ceremony marked the beginning of the flame's journey to Senegal, which will host the first-ever Olympic event on the African continent from October 31 to November 13, 2026.

International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry expressed profound emotion during the event, noting the historical significance of an Olympic competition finally reaching Africa. The ceremony included cultural performances from both Greece and Senegal, featuring the national anthems and a youth relay with athletes such as Brancou Badio, Oumy Diop, and Louis François Mendy.

Once in Senegal, the flame is scheduled to travel through all 14 regions of the country, involving approximately 450 torchbearers, including athletes, celebrities, and civil society members. The Dakar 2026 Games are expected to bring together roughly 2,700 athletes aged 15 to 18 competing in 25 different sports.
