Dakar 2026: Preparations intensify for Africa's first Youth Olympic Games

Preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), the first to be held on the African continent, are entering a critical phase. Scheduled from October 31 to November 13, 2026, the event is expected to host approximately 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 18 competing across 25 disciplines.

To ensure operational success, several key partnerships have been established. The Société Africaine de Raffinage (SAR) has signed a convention with the Organizing Committee (COJOJ) providing 50 million FCFA and fuel support. Additionally, a tripartite agreement between SONES, SEN’EAU, and COJOJ has been formed to secure water supply and service quality during the games.

Infrastructure and legacy projects are also a priority. The organizing committee is focusing on sustainable development through the Dakar Learning Academy, which aims to train 400 youth in sports event management. International cooperation is evident through the Seine-Saint-Denis department in France, which is sharing expertise from the Paris 2024 Olympics and funding mobility projects for Senegalese youth.

While Senegalese Minister of Youth and Sports Djirèye Clotilde Coly has affirmed that the country is ready, athletes like Chad's Lucienne Diallate and Banssoubo Kebzabo are already intensifying their training despite facing challenges such as nutrition and recovery resources.
