Dakar flooding causes electrical fire at Philippe Maguilen Senghor Hospital

Heavy rainfall in Dakar has caused significant infrastructure damage and operational challenges. At the Philippe Maguilen Senghor Hospital, stormwater runoff led to an electrical failure that resulted in a fire. The incident destroyed critical flood-mitigation equipment, including a generator, two electric pumps, and an electrical enclosure.

Blaise Faye, the Director in charge of exploitation and maintenance at the Office national de l’assainissement du Sénégal (ONAS), noted that the hospital is situated in a low-lying basin where surrounding infrastructure funnels rainwater toward the grounds. The electrical fault was triggered by fluctuations in power quality during the storm.

This event highlights broader systemic vulnerabilities in Dakar’s urban drainage. Recent municipal inspections of 95 strategic locations, including canals and pumping stations, revealed that 95 percent of the sites required urgent or priority intervention.
