Dakar NOLA receives first Michelin star for Senegalese cuisine

Dakar NOLA, a restaurant located in New Orleans and led by Senegalese-born chef Serigne Mbaye, has been awarded its first Michelin star. The establishment is one of only three restaurants in the Southern United States to receive a new star this year.

The restaurant is recognized for a tasting menu that blends Senegalese culinary traditions with Louisiana ingredients. Featured dishes include Thiéboudienne (jollof rice), Gulf crab with black beans, shrimp soup, and okra sauce. Michelin inspectors described the restaurant as “original and exceptional,” noting it offers an “extraordinary experience.”

This recognition follows Serigne Mbaye receiving the James Beard Award for Best Chef of the South earlier this year. The achievement highlights the international influence of Senegalese gastronomy and its cultural heritage.
