Dakar Rally 2027 to move from Saudi Arabia to Morocco and Europe

The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) is planning a major relocation for the 2027 Dakar Rally due to geopolitical instability and security concerns in the Middle East. Originally scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia, the event is expected to return to Africa, with Morocco serving as the primary host.

The proposed itinerary suggests a shift in timing and logistics. Instead of the initial January 1 start, the rally may begin on January 9. The plan includes conducting technical verifications, administrative checks, and a prologue in Europe—likely in Spain or Portugal—before the competition moves to Morocco.

The revised format is expected to consist of 12 competitive stages covering approximately 4,300 kilometers of timed special sections. This change aims to ensure the safety of drivers, mechanics, and support crews while maintaining the high level of competition characteristic of the rally. The decision follows increased security alerts in the region, which have prompted various international sporting bodies to reconsider their presence in the Middle East.
