Dalian University researchers develop eggshell-inspired shield for space debris
Researchers at the Dalian University of Technology in China have developed a new method to protect spacecraft from space debris using an eggshell-inspired aluminum metastructure. The design involves 3D-printed, egg-shaped aluminum hollow bodies filled with water, positioned between two protective plates.
In simulations, this structure significantly improved energy management during hypervelocity impacts. The water-filled egg structures reduced the velocity of incoming projectiles by nearly 65 percent, compared to approximately 51 percent for standard aluminum plates without the additional structure. This approach aims to enhance the traditional Whipple shield principle by using the deformation of the structures to absorb and distribute impact energy.
The research addresses the growing threat of orbital debris. Estimates from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) indicate millions of pieces of debris are in orbit, with particles as small as 1 cm capable of causing severe damage to satellites and spacecraft due to their high relative speeds.
